Customers Say:"Don,Okay, I give up: so many plants and several pleasant surprises. Despite having a basic aquascape prepared on paper, the range and number of plants sent me back to the sketchpad. The final “design” is a combination of “by the book” and improvisation. Any lapses are my own, because the quality and selection of plants are exceptional. Am I worthy of Ammania senegalensis ? I’ll let you know in a month or two. Best E. ozelot I have ever seen and the E. uruguayensis was a specimen within 15 minutes of placement. The A. crispus is beautiful with green, olive and dark khaki foliage. My only complaint is that you sent so much Java fern that I ran out of space on two large pieces of driftwood, and my vegan daughter-in-law is not due to visit until September. In all seriousness, thanks for your help and the exceptionally nice plants."

Customers Say:"Hey folks,No long winded stories here, just some before and after pictures. The one labeled "planting day" is one many of you saw a while back. The one labeled "now" is, well, now. The long windy things in the middle are lilly pad stems, the leaves of which you can see at the top. They're quite happy and I have to prune off 5 or so every week. I want to extend a big thanks to David Kee from Kee's Aquarium and Pets (Shelby Michigan) who hooked me up with a beautiful Oceanic tank, all the equipment, fish and knowhow. Also to Don Matakis at freshwateraquariumplants.com who supplied all of the plants. Don and Dave have been an ongoing help and it's a rare week that I don't talk to them at least once. So if you get into the aquarium hobby, look them up, they are top notch operations. What you can't see in the "now" photo is that the tank is now surrounded by a picture frame. Customers Say:"Hi Don and Linda,"The plants arrived Saturday in great shape and the tank is planted as you can see from the photograph. We are thrilled with the way it looks! The kids love it and my wife and I just sat an looked at it for over an hour on Saturday evening. (We still need to put a picture frame around the edges) Some things I am working through: 1. I started the C02 last night and the pH immediately started to drop. Last night the pH was at 8.4 and this morning was holding steady at 7.7. I presume I will just keep it going at 2 bubbles per second until the pH gets to neutral. It seems to be holding at 7.7 though. 2. I have dosed 65ml of Tropica mastergrow. 3. I have not yet put in the nitrate or the phosphate fertilizer, I will do that this evening targeting 5-10 ppm nitrate and .3-.5ppm phosphate. 4. The tank is a bit warm, the temperature is running at 81F just due to the water pump (Poseidon pump, warms the water a bit but is silent running) and the tank being in an enclosure. The heaters don't run at all and I am only running one light ballast (160 watts 6000k bulbs). I'm looking into powered ventilation for the room the tank is in to help cool things down. 5. The ammonia has not yet started to build up after a week with fish. I talked with my lfs guy Saturday about it and he says 12 danios are not enough to cycle that size tank. If there is a major issue with plants in an uncycled tank let me know. I'll pick up some more fish this week. Please let me know if you are concerned about anything above, if not I'll keep working to get things adjusted. I'll be in touch with the progress. I can't thank you both enough for all the help in setting up my aquarium to grow plants, oh and for all the plants that are in it! I hope you have more customers than you know what to do with, and even if you do, please make room for me too! Sincerely

Before I opened every thing I went through and did an inventory check just to make sure I got all my plants and the right amount. I was missing some crypts. But you replaced those with a different kind of crypt. I was also missing an Anubius Nana. Without thinking I called right away and I got the machine, so I left a message. So later on in the evening I started to actually open the plants and put them in my tank. I had a bunch of extras! By just counting them by what they said on the bag I had 50. But when I was putting them into the tank I found 17 extra plants full size without counting the extra val there was too much too count. I planted it upright but noticed there are roots all along the vine so wasn't sure if that was right. I'm writing to let you know that all of the plants included in my recent order (the invoice is in the below, original e-mail message) arrived in good condition yesterday afternoon. Also, thanks very much for the extra/free Java Fern "babies" and for the extra/free specimen of Anubias berteri, var. nana (ABN). Speaking of the ABN specimens (all four of which look absolutely beautiful), I was surprised by their overall size. Based on my reading and on the photos I have seen of ABN (yesterday was my initial, first-hand and up-close exposure to it), I was expecting the plants to be significantly smaller than the Java Fern specimens I received. However, they appeared - to me - to be much larger/taller than the Java Ferns. Perhaps, that situation is because the ferns I received are much younger than the ABN? So far, all I've done with the plants before placing them in their "home," a 6-gallon aquarium (it's an Eclipse 6 system), is to very carefully - without damaging the rhizomes - trim the roots radiating off the rhizomes, so that the roots are not more than about 1 to 1.5 inches long. Also, I removed some damaged/dead leaves from the ferns (again taking care not to damage the rhizomes). My initial plan, before placing the order, was to have the ABN in the tank's foreground. However, because they now seem to be so much larger than the ferns I received, I'm now planning to keep them in the tank's background (for the time being) and to have the ferns in the foreground and/or midground. Thanks again for the efficient delivery of your high quality plants. ."

Brief setup parameters: 55 gal standard dimensions/Emperor 400 filter with standard cartridges(supplemental boxes empty)/Coralife4x65watt PC-6500K/8 small Zebra Danios/ established gravel bed from previous community aquarium housed in tank with coarse deep layer, medium top layer natural gravel(total depth 4-5 inches). I know I should have written this letter first, not after the fact. Do you have any suggestions? Do I need CO2? Recommended fertilization regimen to start since I have no substrate fertilization except about five years of fish excrement and food(water changes done with a python so a lot removed with cleaning)? My office staff already thinks I'm nuts, so I want to wow them."

Most of the plants in great to near perfect condition...some had a couple of bad leaves and or tangles of other plants in them...but that was to be EXPECTED. I got more, much more, than I bargained for though. A tiny sprig of a wispy feather-like plant that has pink-red tips to the tiny leaves--I think it is Rotala wallichii (BONUS) and also some java moss spigs(I THINK). All total I am very pleased with the order and wanted to let you know. I also got a couple of hitchikers in the bag also...some tiny snails...at first I was going to kill them but decided that it was best to let them live..(easier to tame snails than it is to tame algae out-breaks)--so the snails are a bonus also. The Coffeefolia is already "pearling" (streams the tinyest air bubbles coming up from the rhizome)--I placed it in the center, under the bright light part of tank to help it thrive. The Nana(both of them) are very healthy. My tank was saturated to almost toxic levels of CO2 this morning (about 7.0 ph with Kh of ~12 deg = ~36 ppm +/-)..now even the water is better looking after just a couple of hours!! "Jeff Natz

The reds you sent me are beautiful and it's up to me to make them grow. I've got a good light now (2W/gal, 90 CRI) and I've got the reds directly under the lamp and off-center. My DIY CO2 need an upgrade because it struggles to get the pH below 7 now. I'm am now in the process of making a controller (I love projects) for a high pressure system that should be up and running in a month or two. If nothing else, I can have it up and running in several weeks manually. I'll let you know how it goes and I'll get back with you for some fertilizer balls later this year. Customers Say:"I just wanted to send a picture of my tank since I planted the plants I bought from you the second week of July. I have been using Kent Pro Plant, and both Flourish and Flourish Excel. The plants are growing so fast, I find myself pruning every three days or so. One day It got to the point that I had like 15 large red leaves at the top of the tank completely blocking light to the rest of the plants. I pruned heavily that day. I am currently having to cut back on the pruning a little as a pair of Blue Rams I have are breeding and I can't get to that side of the tank with the clippers without them attacking the clippers. The plants are wonderful and I will be getting a new larger (125g) tank fairly soon, so I will definitely be buying some more plants.
